In Hawaii, one could argue the natural environment outshines the built environment, which may be why the architecture of Oahu’s largest city is consistently trying to reverse that. Honolulu has a wealth of notable architecture, especially Modern architecture, that thankfully has withstood the constant onslaught of development that has occurred since the 1940’s and 50’s. “Napili 001” is the first in a series on images that captures the architecture of Napili Tower Apartments. Designed in 1962 by Mark Potter of Potter & Potter Architects, who interestingly was a direct descendant of famed 17th-century architect Sir Christopher Wren, each physical feature of the building is boldly expressed but also part of a cohesive whole. The hero of this image is the concrete screen rising up the facade of the building in a distinctive Modernist design that is a giant scale version of the perforated masonry block at the base of the building.

The exterior walls of the building are set back significantly from the concrete balconies that form the outer shell of the building, creating a strong horizontal movement enhanced by the light to dark bands created by the shadowy depths of the balcony voids. This horizontal rhythm is only countered by the architectural screen running vertically up the façade but still respecting the rhythm of the balconies with placement of the perforations. Again, the form of the screen creates deep shadows in the Hawaiian sun that enhance the verticality while maintaining the horizontal rhythm.
