The Royal Palm Hotel on Colins Avenue in Miami Beach was one of the great Art Deco edifices created in this popular vacation spot during the 1920’s and 30’s. It saw its heyday in the 1950’s and early 1960’s when Miami Beach was at its most glamorous with the likes of Sinatra, Elvis, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Gleason, and The Beatles all frequenting the town. Eventually, the glory days ended and by the end of the 1980’s, the Royal Palm had become one more of the dozens of dilapidated and neglected Miami Beach hotels. Rather than demolition though, a valiant attempt to save and restore the property was made in 1996 but the hotel was found to be too structurally unsound to be saved. Instead, African American entrepreneur Roy Donahue Peebles, agreed to demolish and rebuild the hotel on its original site, from its original plans, using original construction techniques and details.
When completed in 2002, the Royal Palm was the first full-service luxury hotel in America to be owned, developed and managed by African Americans.
