Often referred to as the ‘Palace of Winds’, Hawa Mahal was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799 to facilitate ladies of the royal household enjoying processions and observe drama unfolding in the street below without being seen. This was in line with the strict rules of ‘purdah’, which meant they were not allowed to appear in public without covering their face, so instead they would peer out but from behind the carefully-crafted window latticework.
What is so striking about “Hawa Mahal” photographed by Nathan White is that the morning sunlight is hitting the building’s façade almost strait on, allowing the intricate detail and the beauty of the red and pink sandstone, which the “Pink City” of Jaipur is famous for, shine in its entirety.

All prints and framed prints are made-to-order for you. Prints are printed on high-quality archival cotton rag fine art paper with a white border. Each print is limited edition certified and shipped rolled. Framed prints are Shadow Box frames with the print set back from the protective glazing.
Though some grain and blur may be present due to the unique properties of these works, all prints are reproduced at high resolution to reduce any irregularities. Imperfection in hand-held street photography is why we love it!
